Set up SEO for your website

SEO helps search engines discover and understand your public pages. Start by making the page useful for the person searching, then check that the page can be reached and indexed.

Publishing or completing an SEO checklist does not guarantee a Google ranking. Google decides which pages to index and how to display them.

Give each page a clear job

Choose one main question or service for each page. A service page should explain who the service helps, what is included and how to take the next step. A help article should answer its question with the actual steps and useful examples.

Use words your customers use naturally. Avoid repeating a phrase in every heading or creating nearly identical pages for every location unless each page contains useful, specific information.

Write a clear title and description

Open the page's SEO Settings. Give the page a distinct title and description that match its visible content. Use a share image that makes sense for the page.

For example, a career-coaching service page could use “Career coaching for first-time managers | Example Coaching” and a description that explains the service and consultation process. See SEO titles and descriptions.

Make the content easy to read

Use a clear main heading and descriptive section headings. Put the answer near the start. Add examples or screenshots where they explain something that text alone makes difficult.

Use descriptive links to related pages. Readers should understand the destination without relying on “click here.” Add useful alternative text to informative images. See image optimisation.

Check the public version

Save and publish the page, then open its public URL. Check that it shows the actual content and is not a draft preview, missing page, access screen or blocked website.

Turn on search visibility for pages you want search engines to consider. Hiding a page from search is not password protection: it can still be publicly accessible through its URL.

Check discovery

Use the website's sitemap to check eligible published pages. In Google Search Console, inspect the exact public URL and review the reported indexing status.

If a page is not indexed, start with the reported reason. Do not assume that changing the title repeatedly or adding more keywords will solve a technical access problem.

Improve the page over time

Use actual customer questions and relevant search data to decide what to add. Correct outdated instructions, replace broken links and add missing examples. Keep one useful page for one topic instead of accumulating duplicates.
